- Situated about 30 km southwest of New Delhi (and roughly 10 km from Delhi’s Dwarka sub-city), Gurugram forms a key part of the National Capital Region (NCR).
- It’s well-connected to Delhi via expressways, the Delhi Metro, and major highways like NH-8.
- The city lies in southeastern Haryana, with coordinates roughly between 28° N latitude and 77° E longitude, at an elevation of around 217–229 meters.
History and Name Change
Gurugram has ancient roots — legend ties it to the Mahabharata era, where it was called “Guru-gram” (village of the guru), as the land was gifted by Yudhishthira to Guru Dronacharya (whose tank still exists near the railway road). Historically, it was an agricultural trade center under various rulers (Mughals, British, etc.), and after India’s independence, it became part of Punjab before Haryana was formed in 1966. In 2016, the name was officially changed from Gurgaon to Gurugram to reflect its traditional Sanskrit/Hindi pronunciation.
